1+1 is not automatically 3 by M. Buisman
It's been a while since the Shins have released an album but they haven't been doing nothing. Singer James Mercer has recorded an album with Danger Mouse under the moniker of Broken Bells. If you think Shins songs with different instrumentation and production... well, you're really not far off on some songs like `Vaporize' or `October'. The production is low-key but good and almost never strays into the hard sounds that make the Gnarls Barkley albums so effective. Only `The Ghost Inside' is reminiscent of the GB beat. It shows once more that Danger Mouse is one of the premier producers of the last few years. Mercer's songwriting should never be subject to suspicion either as all songs here carry the Mercer mark. If you can write songs that sound like you wrote them even though they are recorded differently you are a true master in your craft.

The album definitely has it's moments, but don't expect a 1+1=3 album. The talent of both artists doesn't mean an even better album. It's a pleasant listening experience but there are not enough memorable moments to make this album a contender for album of the year. 3 ½.

Better Than Demon Days by DW
Plastic Beach works because Damon Albarn seems to be more involved in this album than Demon Days and the melodies are more apparent and better. The latest collaborators include high profile artists like Lou Reed, Snoop Dog, De La Soul, Mos Def, Mark E. Smith (The Fall), Bobby Womack and Gruff Rhys (SFA).

"I know a room full of musical tunes.

Some rhyme, some ching, most of them are clockwork.

Let's go into the other room and make them work."

We are future pixels in factories far away. by Jason Stein
Damon Albarn's side project, Gorillaz, has surely surpassed all expectations, becoming equally, if not more popular than Blur. No one expected the project to be this successful. I am a fan of Blur, I have all their albums, and I have all of Gorillaz albums. "Plastic Beach" is just as uneven as everything that has come before it.

At 16 tracks, the album is a tad too long, as are all Gorillaz albums. Albarn doesn't know when to cut and edit. Several tracks on the second half of "Plastic Beach" should have been relegated to "P-Sides". The number one most likely to be a b-side is "Sweepstakes". Easily the most sub-par track on the entire disc. It sticks out like a sore thumb. "To Binge" and "Pirate Jet" could have also been b-sides. That at least would have trimmed the fat.

There is a stretch of solid tracks from "Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach" through "On Melancholy Hill". Of those, the standout tracks are first single "Stylo" with its sample of Eddy Grant's "Time Warp", "Superfast Jellyfish" with its strange mix of humor and strong catchy melody, "Empire Ants" with its dual parts, "Glitter Freeze" which may or may not be an intentional homage to Gary Glitter's "Rock And Roll, Part 1", "Some Kind Of Nature" with Lou Reed's deadpan delivery and the most straightforward pop song on the disc, "On Melancholy Hill".

So that makes approximately 9 good songs. In the old days, that would make an album. Now, the thing to do is add, and add, and add. There are too many average songs on "Plastic Beach", and the same is true with "Demon Days" and "Gorillaz". You could take the best songs from all three albums plus "G-Sides" and "D-Sides" and have a really good Gorillaz compilation. At this point I am voting to have Blur back for a while and have Gorillaz go on hiatus.

As a side note, after listening to "Plastic Beach" all week, I began to notice how nearly every track mentions plastic or beach.

Here's how "Plastic Beach" compares to Gorillaz other albums:

2001 Gorillaz: Three Stars

2002 G-Sides: Two Stars

2005 Demon Days: Three and a Half Stars

2007 D-Sides: Three Stars

2010 Plastic Beach: Three and a Half Stars

This time, the harmonies have grown more angelically layered, the string arrangements more dramatic, the songwriting even sharper and more confident. I watched Ms. Boyle on TV when she appeared on I beleive it was Talent Search where she froze on camera and couldn't continue. My heart went out to her. That happened to me once and it was called then and now "stage fright". When I accidentily ran accross the cd on Amazon I decided to purchase it. I sure glad I did. The lady has talent and she should be heard. So far I haven't heard it played on any station that we have, here in central Arkansas.

It's Entertainment!

It's Entertainment!
Overture and beginners please... Strike up the band... Stand by for Celtic Thunder... and It s Entertainment . This stylish and high energy trip through some of the great songs of the last 30 years is pure showbiz! It is a tribute from Celtic Thunder to the legacy they have inherited from the great entertainers of the past, and a mark of how far they themselves have travelled as performers, in a few short years. It evokes an era of big bands and boulevards, top hats and tails and singing and dancin in the rain! It makes for irresistible listening as the principals from this generation pay their respects to the stars of an earlier time. In the true tradition of variety the music covers a mix of styles, of songs and of singers, as the lads salute their musical heroes- from Fred Astaire to Neil Diamond, from Jim Croce to Chicago, from Michael Buble to The Beach Boys!
Each member features with two songs, one a serious workout, the other a bit of pure fun and a chance to let the hair down! These lighter choices have George stomping around to The Proclaimer s My Life With You , while Ryan takes on the persona of a Chicago gangster with Bad, Bad Leroy Brown . Keith slips right into character with a Surfer Medley and Damian becomes a bit of a boulevardier with Standing On The Corner . Paul steps up to the plate as an accomplished song and dance man with the rooty-tooty Doo Wacka Doo , specially written by Phil Coulter. One big surprise package is guitarist Neil who not only joins Ryan and Keith in a haunting, close harmony version of Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah but also delivers a superb, soulful solo on the Disney classic When You Wish Upon A Star . The show is rounded off by a couple of ensemble numbers, featuring all six singers, the perennial Amazing Grace and U2 s anthemic Still Haven t Found What I m Looking For . All in all, this is an inspired celebration of wonderful songs and great singers, an uplifting feel-good package that is the perfect antidote to the recession blues! read more..

CT Scores Again! by L. A. Augustin
To put it in hockey terms, Celtic Thunder has scored a hat trick with this, their third CD. I enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed their first two. The solo performances highlight each man's talents and personalities perfectly. There are two surprises this time. Neil Byrne steps from background singer to shine on center stage with his lovely version of "When You Wish Upon a Star." Caroline gives a fiery, feminine counterpoint with "Just Like Jesse James." As much as I like the solos, it's the ensemble pieces that send my heart soaring. Neil, Ryan, and Keith blend their voices into the sweetest harmonies this side of Heaven in "Hallelujah". In the piper's classic, "Amazing Grace", the lead vocal intricately weaves itself from soloist to soloist through richly building harmonies to create a lush audio tapestry.

A longed for sound returns by J. Betancourt
To be honest on my first few listens this CD did not sound good compared to previous Sade work. However, I gave it a chance, after all, I paid for it. Well, now I love it. Give it time. The music is so mellow at times that you forget to listen to the rich interplay going on with the excellent artists. But, the guitar, sax, bass, keyboards, and other instruments are still being played by great musicians, and of course, Sade's vocals are unique and have a beauty of their own.

When I first heard Sade (and saw the band live) I loved the music. That music is here too. Perhaps not to the previous levels, no "Is It A Crime?" here. Yet, satisfying. My favorites on this CD are "The Moon and the Sky", "Long Hard Road", "Bring me Home", and "Skin".

Funny when I listen the the beginning of "Long Hard Road" I expect one of Bob Dylan's songs to follow, but I can't place it. Maybe it is "One More Cup of Cup of Coffee" from the Desire CD?

Dreaming Those Dreams by Gregor von Kallahann
The mini-dustup over Elaine Paige's "virus" remarks about Susan Boyle (supposedly taken out of context--but what's the CONTEXT??) are no doubt reflective of what a lot of show biz types feel deep down about "overnight sensations" like Susan. What for most people is an inspiring story about dreaming a dream is--at least for some--another troublesome of case of someone rising to the top without ever having paid any real dues.

There's another way to view it, though. There are all KINDS of dues. Yes, there are the trials and tribulations and very real SACRIFICES that people who devote themselves to their art have to go through for years on end, with no guarantee of any recognition or reward in the end. That's very real. But from what we know about Susan Boyle's life (or other "ugly duckling" late-in-life discoveries like Paul Potts), we have to acknowledge that there were crushing psychic blows, bitter disappointments and many, many hurdles to overcome, some musical, of course, but mainly we're talking personal demons here. And painful life circumstances.

Even though it's not Susan's preferred musical genre, those of us who are more steeped in rock'n'roll know something about the DYI ethic. Inspired amateurs sometimes give the lie to the long cherished (in some corners) notion that there is a huge gulf between the talented beginner and the true artiste. It doesn't detract from the achievements of the Elaine Pages of the world to say that late bloomers like Susan Boyle have their place too.

Having said all that, I'm somewhat disappointed in Susan's debut. I'm not sure what I expected in terms of arrangements and song selection, but it probably wasn't much different from what we actually ended up with. I'm impressed that she or Simon or someone in management dug up a classic Stones ballad, to say nothing of a somewhat well-known Patty Griffin tune that really does deserve a broader audience. very positive thing she seemed to bring to the table--at least in her TV performances--was a robust, mature delivery and a voice that was certainly sweet enough, but richer than those of the current crop of ingenues (the ones who can actually SING, I mean).

But nearly every vocal on this record sounds "sweetened" to my untrained ears. The emotion that she demonstrated on BRITAIN'S GOT TALENT seems needlessly reined in. (I say "needlessly" since she really was not a singer prone to overkill to begin with). It sounds as if her producers set out to make her sound like a 20 year old, not a woman closing in on 50. The breathy voice employed on "Wild Horses" may demonstrate "another side" of Susan Boyle, but unfortunately, it's a little too anonymous. YouTube faves "I Dreamed A Dream" and "Cry Me A River" fare better, but the former is more reined in than it needs to be. I'm not so sure that in Ms. Boyle's case, less really IS more. The cabaret style of "Cry..." is very nice, however.

"How Great Thou Art" has Susan channeling Enya, which is probably better than trying to evoke Mahalia, say (let the choir do that). The fact that some of the tunes, while certainly pleasant, are not all that vocally demanding ("Daydream Believer" and "You'll See"), adds to the subdued mood. She certainly gives Madonna a run for her money on "You'll See," and I'm sure the tune has a somewhat different meaning for her than for its composer. In her personal commentary to "Daydream Believer," Susan cites the altered lyrics "the hours of yesterday don't mean a thing" as being personally significant. I don't think there'd be anything wrong, necessarily, with a female singer singing original "the shaving razor's cold and it stings," since women shave too, but to each her own. The conversion of "Sleepy Gene" into "Sleepy Jean" in this version is more or less complete, but why is the narrator still "a white knight on a steed" still? Maybe it's a Joan of Arc thing.

Patty Griffin's "Up To The Mountain" was written as a tribute to Martin Luther King, and while it would have been nice to have that acknowledged, the version here is nonetheless a credible one. Here the restraint works--as it did in Griffin's original. "Amazing Grace" gets gospelly, but again that's the chorus's shtick. Susan stays on a more ethereal plain throughout the song. That's a valid interpretation, but you gotta wonder if Susan wasn't a little jealous of the way her back up gets to cut loose a little.

It's been pointed out that every song has some personal meaning for Susan, and her own liner notes clue you in as to what that is. For the old chestnut, "End of the World," she's careful to say that that's NOT true, "it's only just beginning." We know that, Susan. It's just a song, after all. But the relatively bleak lyrics give her vocal a little more edge than we encounter elsewhere. Sorta like how on the televised versions of "I Dreamed A Dreamed," she pulled out the stops on "this hell I'm living" line. She doesn't do that on the recorded version. And I kinda miss it.

Scratch My Back

Scratch My Back
Peter Gabriel s Scratch My Back album project is the first part of a series of song
exchanges in which Gabriel and other leading artists reinterpret each other s songs.
To help craft his recording of the album s eclectic array of cult favorites and classic
tracks, Gabriel enlisted former Durutti Column member John Metcalfe, composer,
arranger and the expertise of producer Bob Ezrin (Pink Floyd s The Wall , Lou
Reed s Berlin ) and engineer, mixer and producer Tchad Blake (Suzanne Vega,
Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits).
Gabriel describes this as a very personal record with twelve songs performed only
with orchestral instruments and voice. He made the choice not to include guitar or
drums. The album s richly diverse sounds include the sparse romance of Lou Reed s
The Power of the Heart , the powerful musical journey of David Bowie s Heroes
and an epic arrangement of Arcade Fire s My Body Is A Cage. Gabriel and his
collaborators recorded the album at George Martin s Air Lyndhurst Studios and the
Real World Temple with further editing and mixing at his own Real Worlds Studio in
Wiltshire. The Scratch My Back release is one of the most creative and engaging
records from an iconic artist in a long time. The marketing focus is to penetrate
Peter Gabriel s core fan base as well as fans of all genres and in all demographics
given the scope of artists being covered as well as its depth of composition. read more..

Genuine Negro Jig

Genuine Negro Jig
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are as much about revelation as revival. On its Nonesuch debut, Genuine Negro Jig, the trio brings exuberance, humor, virtuosity and an infectious
acoustic groove to its exploration of a near-forgotten brand of banjo-driven string-band music originating more than a century ago in the foothills of North Carolina, the Piedmont region where band members Rhiannon Giddens and Justin Robinson were raised. In this rural area, musicians, both black and white, once shared and swapped tunes. Over the decades, the importance of the African-American role in string-band music was diminished, its sound and significance
co-opted by minstrel shows and segregated by record labels. CCD -- under the tutelage of nonagenarian fiddler player Joe Thompson, one of the last surviving Piedmont musicians - have reclaimed the old-time songs, making them vital and fresh for right now, reasserting in the process the African roots of the banjo.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops have won over crowds at the Newport Folk Festival, on such National Public Radio shows as Mountain Stage and A Prairie Home Companion, and on tours through Europe. Denzel Washington personally selected the trio to appear in his critically acclaimed 2007 directorial effort, The Great Debaters. In a review of a CCD Kennedy Center performance, The Washington Post declared, 'Their set was anything but academic... these instrument-swapping residents of Durham, N.C., kept the audience active with speedy strumming, jug-blowing and percussion via carved
hand-held bones and foot-banging syncopation.' The Boston Globe concurred: 'The acoustic trio - banjo, fiddle, guitar - managed the minor miracle of evoking a sepia- drenched era of mountain music... Giddens, Robinson and Dom Flemons, all multi- instrumentalists and vocalists, conveyed their deep knowledge with a sense of reverence and studied antiquity- including their simple, era-appropriate costumes - and a contagious, abundant joy.'
After two self-recorded independent releases, CCD chose to work with producer Joe Henry on Genuine Negro Jig. As with his production on Allen Toussaint's The Bright Mississippi, Henry emphasizes simplicity, clarity, interaction; with its striking lack of studio frills, the emphasis is on the spirit of these performances, which are often as intense as they are exhilarating.
Uptempo numbers like live-show favorite 'Cornbread and Butterbeans' and 'Sandy Boys' are immediate standouts, though slow-burning, moody tracks like 'Kissin' and Cussin' and 'Snowden's Jig (Genuine Negro Jig)' prove to be
downright haunting. The versatile Giddens performs the Celtic-style balladry of 'Reynadine' acapella; she's equally convincing taking lead on a brilliant recasting of the 2001 Blu Cantrell R&B-dance hit, 'Hit Em Up Style' Genuine Negro Jig starts out with the specific but winds up with the universal; this is music that has literally traveled continents and
centuries to achieve a brand new relevance, a shared history still in the making. read more..

Valleys Of Neptune

Valleys Of Neptune
This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 previously unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their groundbreaking 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features “Valleys Of Neptune,” one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix’s commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs “Red House,” “Fire,” and “Stone Free.” Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix’s inspired interpretations of “Bleeding Heart” (Elmore James) and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix’s albums throughout the guitarist’s lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE: Track by Track
All of the 12 recordings featured on the album have never before been released on a CD/LP. The songs document the pivotal time period after Electric Ladyland and before Electric Lady Studios and the recordings made there that would later take form as Cry of Love and First Rays.

Valleys of Neptune documents both the final studio recordings Jimi made in 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience and the first efforts with new bassist Billy Cox. As a number of the song titles will be familiar to fans and buyers alike, the following details the key characteristics of each of the tracks on Valleys of Neptune.

"Stone Free": The original 1966 recording by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience is best known as one of Jimi’s signature songs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) featured a new remake by the original group. Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox recorded this version in May 1969. It is a different recording entirely.

"Valleys of Neptune": This track was recorded in September, 1969, and May, 1970. This full-band version has never been released. An extract of a demo Hendrix made of this song -- featuring just Mitchell on drums and percussionist Juma Sultan -- was part of the short-lived Reprise/Polydor album Lifelines, which was in the marketplace between 1990 to 1992.

"Bleeding Heart": This cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James is different entirely from the versions featured on South Saturn Delta and (originally) on War Heroes. This recording has never been issued and features Jimi, Billy Cox, and drummer Rocky Isaac. It was recorded in April, 1969.

"Hear My Train A Comin’": This electric, full-band version is different from the famous 12-string acoustic version that was featured in the 1973 documentary Jimi Hendrix and subsequently on the album Jimi Hendrix: Blues.

"Mr. Bad Luck": Like “Valleys of Neptune”, a different version of this song was part of Lifelines in (1990). Jimi would later develop this song as “Look Over Yonder,” issued as part of South Saturn Delta.

"Sunshine of Your Love": A stage favorite for the group during the 1969 period which has never been released.

"Lover Man": Jimi recorded many different arrangements of this song, including the versions on both the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) and South Saturn Delta. This is an entirely different recording made in February, 1969.

"Ships Passing Through the Night": A never-before-released track taken from the last recording session by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4/14/69.

"Fire/Red House": Both of these songs by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience were recorded at the same February, 1969, session. They feature the expanded stage arrangements Jimi had developed and are not alternate takes of the original 1967 recordings.

"Lullaby for the Summer/Crying Blue Rain": These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released. read more..

k.d. lang is a once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. It's no wonder she has, over the course of more than two decades, attracted such collaborators as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, along with admirers like Philip Glass and Madonna. As lang has matured, she continues to surprise and impress. With the 2008 release of her self-penned, self-produced Nonesuch disc Watershed, Rolling Stone declared, "k.d. lang does what the gifted and the lucky always should: improve as time passes." The Times of London agreed: "It's a quirk of the music industry that one of the sexiest, most sensual voices in all of pop music comes not from some raven-tressed siren in a glitter-dress but a middle-aged woman with a utility haircut and a penchant for male tailoring." lang herself called the album "a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch."

This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.

Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience. read more..

One of the best voices in the world! by groomRN
She has one of the most beautiful voices around. I don't know many other artists who can be so expressive and emotional when singing. Whatever she sings, she sings from the heart. No matter what songs are on her albums, you can't go wrong by buying them!
