Illuminations

On 'Illuminations,' Groban worked with veteran producer Rick Rubin, known for his critically acclaimed work with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Dixie Chicks among many others. Groban co-wrote the majority of the songs, including 'Hidden Away,' which he wrote with Dan Wilson - former leader of the band Semisonic and co-writer of several cuts on the Dixie Chicks' 'Not Ready to Make Nice.' 'Hidden Away' was recorded live with Groban singing and playing piano, Matt Sweeney and Smokey Hormel on acoustic guitars, and veteran R&B icon Spooner Oldham on organ, with a striking orchestral arrangement by David Campbell added later. The opening piano chords and the unfolding melody evoke a timeless Americana, a thread from Stephen Foster through Aaron Copland through Paul Simon and Randy Newman, as Groban makes a heartfelt plea not to hide true love or one's true self.

'Illuminations' finds both Groban and Rubin stepping out of each one's respective zone and creating an entirely new zone. The ninety-minute film combines never-before-seen footage of Springsteen and the E Street Band shot between 1976 and 1978, including home rehearsals and studio sessions with new interviews with Springsteen, E Street Band members, manager Jon Landau, former-manager Mike Appel, and others closely involved in the making of the record.

Simply brilliant. Heard the album on NPR for a few weeks and then went and got it yesterday. Certainly Elton's best in years. His last great album was "Songs from the West Coast". But "The Union" is better. It is the best album this year. And it reminds you of the brilliant music of the 70's. Almost all the songs could be hits. And they would have been hits if they had been a decade ago. But what makes the album unique is that it is an "album". Everything comes together quite well. Elton and Leon are back -- and so is music. Will be remembered as a classic in a few years.

On 'Illuminations,' Groban worked with veteran producer Rick Rubin, known for his critically acclaimed work with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Dixie Chicks among many others. "Welcome back to real music" by S J Buck
Well thats what the advertising blurb says. And for once I think its justified. Whether you buy the standard album or the deluxe edition you won't be disappointed. This is clearly an album Elton John made purely from the heart, to give Leon Russell the limelight back he deserves. As Elton says on the DVD there are no egos involved in this. So this isn't a superstar pairing designed to make money (well not for Elton anyway). In many ways Leon is the star on this. Its his Piano fills and licks that feature, where Eltons Piano playing is mostly relegated to rhythm parts - and thats how Elton wanted it.



The songs are written mainly by Elton, Leon and Bernie Taupin and there are some absolute corkers on here. The album starts with the wistful/romantic Piano introduction to Leon's "If it wasn't for bad", which turns into a great little rock tune. Leon (with Bernie Taupin) also contributes another standout track "I should have sent Roses". This is a marvellous song with an aching melody.



However if you think that Elton is outclassed by his hero you'd be completely wrong. "Hey Ahab" is a wonderfully rocking Gospel feel track and the Civil War ballad "Gone to Shiloh" is another standout from Elton and Bernie. A special mention for Neil Youngs contribution on this track, which gives it very much a Band like feel with three different vocalists taking the lead.



If I was being very critical I'd say there are a few tracks which seem like fillers - the sort of thing that would have appeared on a normal Elton John album (so still fine songs). However even these are lifted by the arrangements and T-Bone Burnetts production.



So where to place this in the cannon of these two great artists. Leon hasn't recorded the sheer volume that Elton has and so it must rate amongst his best, though not as good as his eponymous 1970 album. Not much is!



The last ten years have been very good for Elton. The return to form of "Songs from the West Coast" (2001) and "The Captain and the Kid" (2006) mean that you can't just dismiss those albums. But overall this is better than those two, and in a different league to most of his 1980s and 90s material. Even "Two Low for Zero" which I recently bought on CD isn't in the same class. So yes you have to go back to the 70s to find better Elton John albums and even then theres only a few that match or better this.

"Great Classics Given A Kick To Fly Again". by M. Mariba
This is a great effort CD release by Rod Stewart titled, "Fly Me To The Moon ... The Great American Songbook Volume V". The CD opens up with a great track, "That Old Black Magic", the song does give the mood/sound of the album : Jazzy, orchestral/band stand sound. "Beyond The Sea", has great vocals by Rod Stewart. "I've Got You Under My Skin", a great version of legendary Cole Porter's classic : great bass & orchestral sound, great croaky voice/vocals by Rod Stewart. "What A difference A Day Makes", a great grand piano sound. "I Got A Kick Out Of You", another Cole Porter classic well executed, does give a kick to a great classic. "I've Got The World On A String" & "Love Me Or Leave Me" are good two following tracks. "My Foolish Heart", is a solid track with great vocals & melody. It's my favourite track from this great CD. "September In The Rain", a great song with beautiful brass/parts sound. "Fly Me To The Moon", a great classic by Bart Howard, well executed, a great grand piano sound & vocals. It's Rod Stewart's favourite track & hence the title as well as the inner sleaves's writing. "Sunny Side Of The Street", is rather a weak song from this CD. "Moon River", is a closing track, starts rather weakly somewhat but picks up momentum with great orchestral sound & accordion later on. On overall, this is a great effort by Rod Stewart to give a kick to great classics to let them fly again, a recommended listening.

Pretty Awesome by Brian M. Williams
Sugarland is one of the most interesting bands out there right now. Notice I didn't say interesting country bands. They've never been that interested in fitting their sound within a narrow set of definitions, and even their first album with Kristen Hall didn't sound all that country to me. They've always enjoyed incorporating other styles and genres within their music. I've listened to Jennifer Nettles since her first band, Soul Miner's Daughter, and have always appreciated the fact that she has such a wide range, both in her vocal ability and her stylistic choices. She loves good music, and isn't afraid to make an album that has a reggae song jammed up next to a song that incorporates rap, funky flute, and soul diva style belting (on her first Jennifer Nettles Band album.)



So the fact that The Incredible Machine is pretty much a straight-ahead pop album doesn't surprise me one bit. On their last cd, Love On the Inside, they even included a song titled "The Very Last Country Song." If you look at the title, it might have been a bit of foreshadowing.



All that aside, I think The Incredible Machine is one of their strongest albums yet, if not their best. Many of their past albums have had one or two skippable tracks, the ones I think of as filler. This one demands your attention from the beginning. Many people have written that the music on this album is simple, or repetitive. I think that what they are missing is in the title. The concept of the album and the title song revolves around the human heart, and how it is an "incredible machine." Sugarland attempts to create music that echoes the rhythm and feel of a beating heart, played out by a machine. Therefore, there is a very structured, rhythmic and simple feel to many of the songs, and the repeating words in the chorus of many of the songs evoke a heartbeat. It's a neat trick, conceptually, that ties each song into an overall theme. The lyrics on many of the songs are simple, and primal, like the sound of a heart, and the emotions that come from the heart-just strong, basic, and sometimes overwhelming-like those moments when the heart rules the head-think of Molly Ringwald's character in "Pretty in Pink" just in love with a guy she knows she shouldn't be in love with. Nothing else seems to matter, and she can't think of anything else. That character might be the girl singing "Tonight". Jennifer and Kristian are talented songwriters who can really capture the essence of an emotion.



This album is meant to be heard in one sitting. There's almost a story in the sequence of the songs. Sugarland has said they tried to create a soundtrack to an imaginary contemporary John Hughes movie. It's all in the record-all the emotions, the angst, the comedy, and the lovely feeling of falling in love for the first time. The Incredible Machine isn't good country music. It's just good music. The genre--well, who cares? If it's good, it's good, never mind trying to label it. Appreciate it for what it is, which is the sound of two artists making the music they want to make, on their own terms, and having a really good time doing it.
