Valleys Of Neptune

Valleys Of Neptune
This brand-new, completely unreleased studio album features 12 previously unreleased studio recordings totalling over 60 minutes of unheard Jimi Hendrix. Ten of these recordings were made between February and May, 1969, as the Jimi Hendrix Experience set out to create the sequel to their groundbreaking 1968 double-album Electric Ladyland. The album features “Valleys Of Neptune,” one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix’s commercially unavailable recordings, and includes exciting 1969 arrangements of the classic signature songs “Red House,” “Fire,” and “Stone Free.” Also includes unheard studio versions of Hendrix’s inspired interpretations of “Bleeding Heart” (Elmore James) and Cream’s “Sunshine Of Your Love.” Mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix’s albums throughout the guitarist’s lifetime. Produced by Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer, and John McDermott, the team behind all of the acclaimed Jimi Hendrix CD and DVD releases since 1996.

VALLEYS OF NEPTUNE: Track by Track
All of the 12 recordings featured on the album have never before been released on a CD/LP. The songs document the pivotal time period after Electric Ladyland and before Electric Lady Studios and the recordings made there that would later take form as Cry of Love and First Rays.

Valleys of Neptune documents both the final studio recordings Jimi made in 1969 with the original Jimi Hendrix Experience and the first efforts with new bassist Billy Cox. As a number of the song titles will be familiar to fans and buyers alike, the following details the key characteristics of each of the tracks on Valleys of Neptune.

"Stone Free": The original 1966 recording by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience is best known as one of Jimi’s signature songs. The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) featured a new remake by the original group. Hendrix, Mitch Mitchell, and Billy Cox recorded this version in May 1969. It is a different recording entirely.

"Valleys of Neptune": This track was recorded in September, 1969, and May, 1970. This full-band version has never been released. An extract of a demo Hendrix made of this song -- featuring just Mitchell on drums and percussionist Juma Sultan -- was part of the short-lived Reprise/Polydor album Lifelines, which was in the marketplace between 1990 to 1992.

"Bleeding Heart": This cover of the classic blues song by Elmore James is different entirely from the versions featured on South Saturn Delta and (originally) on War Heroes. This recording has never been issued and features Jimi, Billy Cox, and drummer Rocky Isaac. It was recorded in April, 1969.

"Hear My Train A Comin’": This electric, full-band version is different from the famous 12-string acoustic version that was featured in the 1973 documentary Jimi Hendrix and subsequently on the album Jimi Hendrix: Blues.

"Mr. Bad Luck": Like “Valleys of Neptune”, a different version of this song was part of Lifelines in (1990). Jimi would later develop this song as “Look Over Yonder,” issued as part of South Saturn Delta.

"Sunshine of Your Love": A stage favorite for the group during the 1969 period which has never been released.

"Lover Man": Jimi recorded many different arrangements of this song, including the versions on both the Jimi Hendrix Experience box set (2000) and South Saturn Delta. This is an entirely different recording made in February, 1969.

"Ships Passing Through the Night": A never-before-released track taken from the last recording session by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience on 4/14/69.

"Fire/Red House": Both of these songs by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience were recorded at the same February, 1969, session. They feature the expanded stage arrangements Jimi had developed and are not alternate takes of the original 1967 recordings.

"Lullaby for the Summer/Crying Blue Rain": These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released. read more..

I DO NOT even like COUNTRY by Michael J. Klementovich
BUT I like this CD!!!!!!!!!

Reminds me in spots of JEB LOY NICHOLS and in fact when watching the movie I thought JEB LOY was performing one of the songs!!!!!

A wonderfully acted film !!!

Weak story line but Jeff makes up for the medicore story......

BUT what really makes the film is the music. Its more than country.....its ......well........country with a touch of blues and at times a dash of dare i say jazz????

Colin Farrell and Jeff Bridges belong in country music more then 3/4's of the trash that call themselves Country right at this moment~!

Good job boys!!!!!!

Recollection 2 CD Set
k.d. lang is a once-in-a-generation artist who has consistently displayed an extraordinary interpretative range as well as remarkable vocal prowess. It's no wonder she has, over the course of more than two decades, attracted such collaborators as Roy Orbison and Tony Bennett, along with admirers like Philip Glass and Madonna. As lang has matured, she continues to surprise and impress. With the 2008 release of her self-penned, self-produced Nonesuch disc Watershed, Rolling Stone declared, "k.d. lang does what the gifted and the lucky always should: improve as time passes." The Times of London agreed: "It's a quirk of the music industry that one of the sexiest, most sensual voices in all of pop music comes not from some raven-tressed siren in a glitter-dress but a middle-aged woman with a utility haircut and a penchant for male tailoring." lang herself called the album "a culmination of everything I've done -- there's a little bit of jazz, a little country, a little of the Ingénue sound, a little Brazilian touch."

This two-disc retrospective -- which includes favorites like "Constant Craving" and "Smoke Rings," as well as ten tracks that never appeared on k.d. lang albums; and interpretations of classic songs like Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and The Hollies "The Air That I Breathe" -- illustrates how lang got to this significant point in her career, 25 years after the independent release of her debut, A Truly Western Experience. As lang moved from the subversively whimsical cow-punk sound of her early career in Western Canada to a broader pop palette, she has shown an ever-increasing sophistication, both as songwriter and interpreter. Dramatic, country-meets-lounge opener "Trail of Broken Hearts," from her 1989 Grammy Award-winning Absolute Torch and Twang album, encapsulates where she came from and where she was heading. The luxurious adult pop of "Constant Craving," from the platinum-selling 1992 Ingenue, garnered her a Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female Grammy and remains her best known and most successful single. The effervescent "Miss Chatelaine," also from Ingenue, remains a concert favorite and "I Dream of Spring," is a particularly lush example of what she so artfully created for the acclaimed Watershed.

Her bravura rendition of "Crying," originally cut with Orbison for the soundtrack to the movie Hiding Out, has become a showstopper in her live performances, perhaps rivaled only be her beautifully restrained version of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah." This soaring signature tune appears here as both a new recording, and in its original studio version. On her 2004 Nonesuch debut, Hymns of the 49th Parallel, she explored the work of her fellow Canadian songwriters, including Neil Young ("Helpless") and the woefully underrated Jane Siberry (the sublime "The Valley"). Regardless of its source, her choice of cover material has always been inspired, as evidenced by her take on the Hollies' "The Air That I Breathe," Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," the Beatles' Golden Slumbers," and Chris Isaak's "Western Stars," produced by Nashville legend Owen Bradley, Patsy Cline's mentor, for Shadowlands. lang is equally adept with such standards as Cole Porter's "Love For Sale" and "So In Love," and the jazz classic Moonglow" (performed here with Tony Bennett), and that has endeared her to a multi-generational audience. read more..

This is good, but it leaves out a few. by Robert G Yokoyama
I have most of these songs on her previous albums, but it is good to hear all her songs on one collection. I love "Constant Craving" and the carefree "Summerfling". I love her duet "Crying" with Roy Orbison. The new song "Beautifully Combined" is a romantic love song. I also like her "Moonglow" duet with Tony Bennett. What is missing here are a few more excellent tracks from her the Drag album from 1997 and a few others. I would have loved to have seen "The Joker" and "Don't Smoke in Bed" included here. The beautiful reflective duet entitled "River" with Madeleine Peyroux is also not included here. "A Case Of You" is another song by KD that moves me. This lovely song is missing here. I cannot give this two disc set five stars because of these exclusions. I give it four stars for the excellent music that is included here. This music is highly enjoyable.

Sophomore Album Goes #1! by J. Le
It's about time people start to notice Lady Antebellum. Their first album, had more catchy songs and was better in my opinion, that really defined them as a Country Group. This second album shows how they've matured as artists, songwriters, and performers. Need You Now is undeniably their biggest hit to date...crossing over into the Adult Contemporary category. American Honey (though not written by the trio) was the best follow-up to the ballad. It's fun, cute, upbeat and extremely catchy. A favorite of mine "Love this Pain" seems like a contender for the 3rd single...

...I have a feeling this group will be winning a lot more Grammy's in the years to come.

Emotion & Commotion

Emotion & Commotion
For his first studio album in seven years, Grammy-winning guitarist Jeff Beck returns with an eclectic mix of tracks that find the guitar virtuoso accompanied by a handpicked cast of talented musicians, as well as several songs accompanied by a 64-piece orchestra. Rhino unleashes the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer s restless genius with EMOTION & COMMOTION.
Beck recorded EMOTION & COMMOTION late last year at Sarm Studios in London with award-winning producers Steve Lipson and Trevor Horn. To create the album s diverse sound, Beck used a number of musicians, including appearances by frequent collaborators Vinnie Colaiuta (drums), Jason Rebello (keyboards), and Tal Wilkenfeld (bass). The album also includes contributions from a trio of singers: Imelda May ('Lilac Wine'), Olivia Safe ('Elegy For Dunkirk'), and Grammy-winner Joss Stone ('I Put A Spell On You' and 'There s No Other Me').
To complement the innovative tones he coaxes from his guitar, Beck recorded with a 64-piece orchestra on songs that range from Puccini s immortal aria 'Nessun Dorma' and Elegy For Dunkirk from the film Atonement to 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' from The Wizard Of Oz and Jeff Buckley s interpretation of 'Corpus Christi Carol.'
Beck says the idea of pairing his guitar with an orchestra evolved from the version of Gustav Mahler s Symphony No. 5 he recorded a few years ago. 'It turned out amazingly well, but I didn t want to commit to an entire album of classical music. What appealed to me instead was the idea of bringing together these seemingly contradictory sounds on different kinds of nonclassical music.'
In addition to the orchestral pieces, EMOTION & COMMOTION showcases a number of original compositions. For 'Hammerhead,' Beck fires the rocker s opening salvo through his wah-wah pedal before falling into a deep groove carved out by the rhythm section and horn arrangement. At the opposite end of the sonic spectrum, the airy arrangement that elevates 'Never Alone' provides a wide-angle soundscape for Beck s imagination to freely explore the high-flying melody.
Before launching a world tour to support EMOTION & COMMOTION, Beck will unite with Eric Clapton in February for a series of exclusive shows in London, New York City, Toronto, and Montreal. The guitarists both former members of the Yardbirds will play separately before taking the stage to perform together.
After the shows with Clapton, Beck will play South Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and Japan before returning to America for the U.S. leg of the tour starting mid-April and including an appearance at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on May 1.
For Beck, the new album and tour follows in the wake of a triumphant 2009 his most successful year ever. Among the many highlights were a sold-out world tour; his second induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; the release of the platinum-selling Performing This Week... Live At Ronnie Scott s, which earned a Grammy nomination for 'A Day In The Life'; and magnificent performances with his band at the 25th Anniversary Concert of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden. read more..

Additional tunes on the album include 'Cry Me A River,' 'You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You,' 'Georgia On My Mind' and 'Baby (You've Got What It Takes)' which was performed with Sharon Jones and The Dap-Kings. The title song is a cover of the Van Morrison gem 'Crazy Love.' The CD closes out with a haunting version of 'Stardust' which is performed with the acapella group Naturally 7. disagree by Cindy
I agree with many of the reviewers that this is not Buble's best album but I disagree with many folks' dislike of some of the songs. I love the arrangments of Cry Me a River, Crazy Love & Stardust - they are different enough to be insteresting but not so different that I can't sing along. I'm not as impressed by Georgia & All of Me.

A classic soundtrack - "Crazy Heart" by L. Quido
I've spent the day listening to the Deluxe Edition CD Soundtrack from "Crazy Heart" after seeing the film last night. I have to admit, after watching the music credits, that I was itching to get my hands on the soundtrack, which is a remarkable collection of old and new, including songs from Jeff Bridges and Colin Farrell - who sung them in the movie, and road and redemption songs by artists who have probably all had "Crazy Heart" experiences. Hopefully, the theme song "Weary on the Road" will wake a lot of people up to Ryan Bingham, who probably got his raw voice and his hard living lyrics from life on the road in the bull riding circuit. Bingham's "Mesacalito" from 2007 was a revelation, and is one of my favorite CD's.

The Crazy Heart deluxe version has more songs than the regular soundtrack and a great series of photos in its liner booklet. But this is really about the music. The late, great Stephen Bruton penned some of the original songs and co-produced with T. Bone Burnett. There are distinctive Burnett chops, some of that magic percussion, in the steady stream of consciousness from the music, and part of the soundtrack's charm is how you can close your eyes and see crazy Bad Blake from the film, cruising the dusty roads of Texas and New Mexico.

Even though the whole soundtrack tells a particular story, there were highlights for me...

"Fallin' and Flyin'" is a great song and I loved best the version that Bridges and Farrell did together.

Bridges' solos feature a surprising and world-weary voice - tune into "Hold On You", Bruton's "Somebody Else", where both the lyrics and the country rock of the tune make it memorable (shut your eyes and you're in Texas) , and the end of the picture solo, autobiographical for Bad Blake and where he exists in his life..."Brand New Angel".

And then, those that added to the barhop of Blake's venues in the movie, Thomas Canning's "Wesley's Piano"... beer bar blues, Lucinda William's "Joy", Townes Van Zandt's "If I Need You". You'll find some country classics by Buck Owen, the Louvin Brothers, and Waylon, as well, and a great song by the Tejano star, Lydia Mendoza, "Mal Hombre".

I discovered the amazing songwriter Sam Phillips, by, of all things, watching the "Gilmore Girls" which featured a lot of her music. One of the most eloquent of her songs, "Reflecting Light" from her CD "A Boot and a Shoe", is included here; hopefully it will bring her new listeners. I marveled at the addition until I remembered that T. Bone produced not only that CD, but had reproduced a lot of her older music in 2008 on "The Disappearing Act". Phillips is more pop than country, but to include this song was in keeping with the theme of Crazy Heart:

"Now that I've worn out, I've worn out the world

I'm on my knees in fascination

Looking through the night

And the moon's never seen me before

But I'm reflecting light

I rode the pain down

Got off and looked up

Looked into your eyes

The lost open windows

All around

My dark heart lit up the skies"

~lyrics from "Reflecting Light" by Sam Phillips

I advocate both the movie, an American classic tale of being down and out, with a masterful performance by Bridges and the soundtrack, and I think you'll enjoy them both more if you've experienced both.

Highly recommended.

Another Round

Another Round
With his smooth, sonorous tone, Jaheim is the forerunner and torch-carrier of today's soul-originated R&B. A vocalist in the tradition of such greats as Teddy Pendergrass and Luther Vandross, he signed with former Naughty By Nature beat man Kay Gee's Divine Mill record label in 2000. Jaheim released three albums over five years: his 2001 debut, Ghetto Love; 2002's sophomore set, Still Ghetto - both of which reached RIAA platinum status; and 2006's Ghetto Classics. During that time, he also scored nominations for the BET and Soul Train Music Awards. In 2007, the chart-topping artist returned with his Atlantic Records debut, The Makings of a Man. After taking time off following the release of Ghetto Classics, Jaheim returned with a renewed focus on the direction in which he wants to take his career. read more..

A solid, deep country album. by DanD
In country music, atmosphere is everything. Now, I'm talking real country music: Jennings, Cash, Haggard, Kristofferson. I'm talking about country music that goes straight for your throat and leaves you gasping into your pitcher of beer.

CRAZY HEART isn't quite there...but it's close. Jeff Bridges isn't the world's greatest singer, but he doesn't have to be: he rasps out these songs like he's lived them. Colin Farrell, likewise, isn't much of a singer (though far better than you'd expect), but he sings these songs like he hasn't lived them yet--which of course is fitting with his persona. The space in between these two gentlemen is filled with classic tunes by Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, the Louvin Brothers, etc., and some new tunes by alt-country singer Ryan Bingham, who helped craft the film's soundtrack with producer-extraordinaire T. Bone Burnett. It all leads up to Bingham's haunting "The Weary King," the film's these and rightfully Oscar-nominated tune.

CRAZY HEART is an album of solid country music, the likes of which we haven't seen for a while. If you're a fan of the film, or if you're just despairing over all the Kenny Chesneys and Rascal Flatts and Taylor Swifts, then get a copy of this album, put it in and turn it up. It'll take you back to the days when country music had teeth, and wasn't afraid to use 'em.

The Sea

The Sea
Corinne Bailey Rae's new album, The Sea was co-produced by Bailey Rae with Steve Brown, and Steve Chrisanthou, who produced many of the songs on her debut album, which has sold four million copies worldwide. Bringing together a new band of musicians, Bailey Rae recorded the album mainly in Leeds and Manchester, England. Her voice, always an expressive and soulful instrument, resonates with a poignant and newfound depth on The Sea. Loss and grief are recurring themes yet a sense of beauty and wonder ultimately radiates from the album's dark corners. read more..

Love Bailey Rae's display of growth and maturity by Terri Lee-Johnson
Corinne is back and she brought grown and sexy with her. Yes, there's been talk of this whole album being some sort of lament over the tragic loss of her husband, musician Jason Rae, nearly two years ago. However, I hear more than sorrow. I definitely hear a woman who has loved and lost in a big way, but more importantly I hear a woman. The Sea has such maturity and range. Bailey Rae shows so much vulnerability on this album. She challenged herself vocally which is so refreshing and is a testament to where she is as an artist: uninhibited.

Immediate standouts/ faves for me are:

* I'd Do It All Again. She clearly expresses her unwavering love for her husband despite any shortcomings. It's beautiful and heart-breaking. This is where she shines vocally and just puts her soul on display.

* Closer. Corinne tries on some straight R&B here and she wears it well, like a sexy little black dress. The lyrics, the vocals....everything's on point. I've already played this song like two dozen times.

* Are You Here. Psychedelic and soulful. The track reminds me of the Beatles or Jefferson Airplane. She questions the lingering presence of her husband.

* Love's On Its Way. Another glorious ballad that invokes so much emotion. It verges on being anthemic.

* The Blackest Lily. Rock/ Funk tinged and featuring drummer ?uestlove of The Roots, it's that "I really shouldn't hook up with you but I kinda can't help myself" song.

Now let me make it clear that this entire album is bliss. I'm completely loving this new sound she's serving up. It's a beautiful blend of sweet and sultry . Fledgling and up-and-coming artists, please take note. This is how you grow and evolve.

"Lullaby for the Summer/Crying Blue Rain": These April, 1969, recordings by the original Jimi Hendrix Experience have never been released. read more..

Absolutely Beautiful by k
"The Greatest Journey" was so good, it seems impossible for Celtic Woman to produce another just as good...but they did just that with "Songs From The Heart". It is as if they picked up where they left off on the last album. The music of Celtic Woman reminds the listener that music is a gift to the soul. This music takes you to a place of goodness and purity. Thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end.
