Brothers

Brothers
The maturation of the Black Keys as record makers and performers has been both subtle and startling. With their 2008 Nonesuch release 'Attack & Release' - the fifth album of their eight-year career which doubled the sales of their previous album and Nonesuch debut 'Magic Potion' - guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney illustrated the durability of their few-frills sound, a mysterious and heavy brew of seventies-vintage rock, classic R&B and timeless, downhearted blues. Producer and pal Danger Mouse, their first outside collaborator, didn't try to reinvent their sound but further isolated its essence with the help of a few carefully chosen guest players and some retro-modern electronic gear. It didn't need to get slicker to get better, or, as the Boston Globe put it, ''Attack & Release' proves that cleaning up the boys still won't stop them from tracking mud all over the house.'

Danger Mouse returned to co-produce 'Tighten Up' on 'Brothers,' but for the most part, the duo was on its own, spending ten days at the legendary Muscle Shoals studio in Alabama and coming up with the an even more intensely focused, deeply soulful set that includes a cover of Jerry Butler's 'Never Gonna Give You Up.' The performances are inventive and impassioned: Auerbach extends his vocal range to falsetto on the lead-off track 'Everlasting Light' and 'The Only One'; 'Howlin' For You' opens with a Gary Glitter-style drum riff and the chorus practically invites singing along. The tunes offer a surprising amount of lyrical candor and more than a little dark humor; the grooves alternate between ballsy swagger and bluesy rumination. The album reflects where Auerbach and Carney have been lately, most recently collaborating with a who's who of New York City MC's, including RZA, Q Tip, Mos Def and Raekwon on the 2009 BlakRoc super-session organized by hip-hop impresario and Black Keys fan Damon Dash. They've also pursued projects on their own, Auerbach with his solo 'Keep It Hid' album and tour, Carney with his band Drummer and its debut disc, 'Feels Good Together.' Their maturation didn't happen just in the studio, though. Carney admits, 'Dan and I grew up a lot as individuals and musicians prior to making this album. Our relationship was tested in many ways but at the end of the day, we're brothers, and I think these songs reflect that.'

'Brothers' was primarily cut in Muscle Shoals, a setting that turned out to have more in common with the Akron, Ohio factories where the Black Keys used to record. The place was desolate, the town depressed, so once again the duo slipped into a world all its own. They did additional recording at Auerbach's Easy Eye Sound System in Akron and The Bunker in Brooklyn. The album was mixed by engineer Tchad Blake, a veteran of sessions with Los Lobos, Pearl Jam and Peter Gabriel. Says Carney, 'The way he approaches mixing is the same way we approach making music. Respecting the past while being in the present.' read more..

Best Album Since Their 1st by Michael Kylis
Dan and Pat blow us away with what should be considered their 1st break-up album. Simply put, an amazing effort by an amazing band. And they are only 31 which means at least another 20 years of great music with at least one other break-up album to come. Cheers to you Dan & Pat!

Exile on Main Street

Exile on Main Street
Regarded as one of the greatest albums in rock 'n' roll history and one of the most defining of the Stones' catalogue. Upon its release more than three decades ago, 'Exile on Main Street' innovatively wove varying musical genres, instruments and even artists into a compelling rhythmic masterpiece. The original 18-track double-album was recorded in various stages at multiple locations, including Olympic Studios in London, Keith Richard's mansion Nellcote in France, and in Los Angeles where the literal "Main Street" influenced the album title. These atypical circumstances surrounding the recording process greatly affected the album's outcome which was highly reflective and influenced by the sociopolitical turbulence that marked the late `60s and early `70s. The Stones nixed the influences of a flower-child era and directed their creative process with the edgier, excessive, "more is more" approach of the `70s. Exile reveals a sprawling mix of genres with undertones of blues, country, R&B and gospel mixed with lyrics that fervently demand for release and liberation. The 2-CD version is a 3-panel digi-pak, 2xCDs with a 12 page booklet. The Digipak is printed in reverse board double white to keep an 'uncoated' feel like the original LP release. The 2nd disc features 10 tracks originally recorded during the Exile era including 'Plundered My Soul', 'Dancing in the Light', 'Following the River' and 'Pass The Wine' plus alternate versions of 'Soul Survivor' and 'Loving Cup'. read more..

Wonderful album, awful remaster. by Topraman
I wish the reviews for the Deluxe edition were separate from the reviews for the other editions of Exile. The Deluxe edition gets 1-star. As is predictable for any recent remaster (or any new rock release, unfortunately) from the last 10-12 years, the Deluxe edition of Exile has overcompressed sound that lacks the dynamics or clarity of the 1994 remaster. It's basically the music industry cashing in on consumers who have no idea that they're actually getting an inferior version of what they got years ago.

Don't be fooled by the ridiculous amount of media hype (since when does a remaster with bonus tracks get news time on CNN?); buy the 1994 remaster instead.

Wildly beautiful by Amazon fiend
Much better reviews have already been written here, but I will just chime in to say that this is the single best album I've head in years. These guys are simply the most exciting and worthwhile band around at the moment and you owe it to yourself to get their their last three wonderful albums. I'm a pretty die-hard Radiohead fan, but when someone compared this to OK Computer I found myself in mild agreement (whereas I normally just slap people in the face who make such a comparison) I haven't owned it for long enough (or listened to it 10,000 times like OKC), but the arch and tone and beauty and sadness that made that such a great album are most certainly present here.

Also, If you're not going to get the album AT LEAST download "Sorrow" for $1. If there were any broadcast platform left that anybody listened to, it would be a #1 hit.

The ArchAndroid

The ArchAndroid
Wondaland Arts Society/Bad Boy recording artist Janelle Monáe has announced the release of her eagerly awaited debut album.
'The ArchAndroid' is an 'EMOTION PICTURE' brought to you by Janelle Monáe and the Mad Minds of the
Wondaland Arts Society. The star-studded featured cast includes the legendary Big Boi of OutKast, renowned poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, punk prophets Deep Cotton, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra.
The album was recorded at Wondaland Studios in Atlanta, but written all over the world, including but not limited to Moscow, Prague, Istanbul, Berlin, Amsterdam, New York, and the Palace of the Dogs. 'The ArchAndroid' was inspired not only by the energy of these places, but by such revolutionary musicians and artistic visionaries as Salvador Dalí, Walt Disney, OutKast, Stevie Wonder, Octavia Butler, David Bowie, Andy Warhol, and John Williams. The album was Executive
Produced by Nate Wonder, Chuck Lightning, Janelle Monáe, and Sean 'Diddy' Combs, with

The ArchAndroid Crown: Designed by Zoman Ignatius, the half-elf, half-human mystic, reportedly 500 years ago. According to legend, the crown has several magic properties, as well as innovative technologies that can be employed only by The ArchAndroid. Zoman was a consummate inventor, artist and sculptor, a cross between Tesla and Da Vinci, and as such, he designed the crown to be a work of beauty that would embody the very spirit of Metropolis. According to legend, the crown features prominent Metropolis buildings and towers that will light up radiantly when the one and only true ArchAndroid wears the crown. According to the Daily Horos, this opulent headdress was stolen from the vaults in the Black House, reportedly by 1954, in October of 2715. Several members of 1954 were hunted down and executed for this crime. But the crown was never found. Many claim it has been secreted away to the Wonderground. There is also word that in the year 2010, several 1954 operatives have crafted a replica of this historic headdress to be worn by Janelle Monáe in anticipation for her album The ArchAndroidno word on whether or not this replica has magic properties The Living Cyktionary, 9th Edition, 2719 read more..

Elegant, Unique, and My new Fave!! by M. Skwiat
There was so much buzz surrounding this album and at first it sounded to good to be true. I read some of the reviews on amazon and it got my attention. I then listened to some of the tracks and I heard such a unique and amazing sound. I went and bought this album on Wednesday and it has yet to leave my cd player/ Ipod. Janelle Monae has such a beautiful sound to her voice. The album literally has something for everyone, and the music lover in all of us will appreciate her sound. Listening to these songs I was reminded of artists that I love like Prince, Jimmi Hendrix, Billie Holiday, Lauryn Hill, and a little of the white stripers. The greatness of this album and the artist in general is that she remains her own person. she borrows from R&B, funk, pop, soul and hip hop but she remains true to herself. One thing I love is that her sound is different. Each song has it's own power and magic to it that I instantly connected with. This is an album that any music lover would love!

A blast from the first track to the last! by Matt O
I'm a bit new to the Keys. My first record of theirs was Attack and Release. With that record, it only took me two minutes into the first track "All You Ever Wanted" to know that the Keys were my new favorite band. Likewise, with Brothers- from the first seconds of the first track "Everlasting Light" - I knew I was gonna love this record. And having owned it now for only about two days, it's been in steady, constant rotation. It's a total classic. Blues, rock, soul, simmer, r&b, roadhouse shakers... man... the Keys just melt it all down into an amazing musical gumbo. Standouts for me are Sinister Kid, Tighten Up, Next Girl, The Go-Getter, She's Long Gone, Ten Cent Pistol, and of course their awesome cover of Isaac Hayes Never Gonna Give You Up. This whole album is deeeep. Buy it ya'll.

Infinite Arms

Infinite Arms
"Infinite Arms" is Band of Horses' third full length album and major label debut. Produced by Band of Horses with additional production by Phil Ek and mixed by Dave Sardy, the songs on "Infinite Arms" project the essence of the different American locales that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process, yielding the group's most focused and dynamic recordings to date.

Band of Horses is Ben Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey, and Bill Reynolds. Infinite Arms marks the recording debut for Ramsey and Reynolds, while Barrett and Monroe graced the last album Cease to Begin. Through extensive touring over the last two years, Band of Horses have become a cohesive force, with all members making invaluable contributions to the unmistakable sound that has Bridwell has crafted since the band's inception. read more..

Band of Horses - Infinite Arms by Andrew Vice
I've noticed a good deal of bad press surrounding this album since it came out on Tuesday. Music review sites are damning Infinite Arms as samey and a general lack of progress on the Band of Horses aesthetic. But, here's the thing: if you thought for some reason that Band of Horses was going to pull a major shakeup on this album, you need to get your head screwed on straight. Band of Horses have been doing one thing and doing it well since the release of their debut, and that is writing hook-laden, catchy country rock anthems. Bridwell's honeyspun vox are a hallmark of the band's sound, and whether backed by straightforward rock as on Everything All The Time or atmospheric grooves as on Cease To Begin, his voice is as distinctive as Band of Horses is predictable. On Infinite Arms, Band of Horses have brought us another collection of songs that unmistakably sound like Band of Horses, and I don't get why people are unhappy with that. If you're looking for constant stylistic reinvention, this isn't the band for you, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the band or the album. As the title implies, Bridwell is reaching out on this album, trying to contain and hold close his feelings of love, loss, abject confusion. Bridwell finds comfort in the everyday, remembering past lovers in the wrappers of candy bars. He is a poet of the simplest style, taking the mundane and acknowledging that it is through these things that people often remember specific, better moments in time. This album is without a doubt one for the fans and for those who don't expect Band of Horses to ever step outside of their comfort zone. In fact, it's when they do step outside their well-trodden style, as on the lifeless, trudging "Evening Kitchen," that the band struggles the most.

Live At The Troubadour [CD / DVD Combo]

Live At The Troubadour [CD / DVD Combo]
In November of 1970 James Taylor and Carole King first performed together at the Troubadour on Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, California. Taylor had just released his debut album for the Beatles' newly formed Apple Records and King was finding her way as a first time solo performer even though by then she was a famous songwriter with a string of hits for other artists. When they returned to the club for a two-week co-headlining run in 1971 their lives were somewhat different. That summer Taylor's "Fire and Rain" was topping the charts and King's landmark Tapestry was on its way to making her a music superstar. Thirty-six years later, in November 2007, James Taylor, Carole King and members of their renowned original band "The Section" (featuring guitarist Danny Kortchmar, bassist Leland Sklar and drummer Russell Kunkel) returned to the Troubadour for a three-night, six-show run to celebrate the venue's 50th anniversary. Those historic shows are documented in Live at the Troubadour, a special 2-disc CD/DVD. This remarkable recording, culled from these unforgettable shows, features 15 songs and 75 minutes of pristine video and audio including stunning performances of the pair's most beloved hits such as Carole King's "So Far Away," "It's Too Late," and "Will You Love Me Tomorrow?" as well as James Taylor's "Carolina in My Mind," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain," to name just a few.

The return to the intimate Troubadour--the fertile ground that served as the unofficial home to a some of the era's defining musicians such as the Eagles, Elton John, Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Joni Mitchell--rekindled King's and Taylor's love for making music together. Variety enthused at the time, "Taylor and King reminded us about the intensity of the song, that the artistically-rich and commercially-viable are not mutually exclusive and how one tiny club continues to be a birthing room for some of this city's most memorable music." The experience was deeply felt by everyone, the musicians on stage, and the fans in attendance as well as the project's technical crew: audio producer Peter Asher (an instrumental figure throughout Taylor's career) and Emmy-winning video director, Martyn Atkins. Live at the Troubadour is captured in sterling 5.1 stereo and state-of-the-art high definition video.

In the album's liner notes, Taylor states: "The Troubadour in 1971 wasn't the beginning, but it was a big step into the light for both of us. When we reunited for the Troubadour's 50th Anniversary celebration in 2007, it felt like yesterday. It was, and still is, all about the music and the celebration of performing together." King adds, "What's even more remarkable is that James's and my musical connection and friendship continue to transcend time and place. Whenever we're together, there we are. I feel a tremendous gratitude to be able to share this experience with James, with this fine band, and most of all, with the fans." read more..

A gem from beginning to end by tallahasseelass
The music is wonderfully presented by two classic singer/songwriters and the small but talented musicians (Leland Sklar, Russell Kunkel and Danny Kortchmar) assisting on this collaborative effort are outstanding. Add to the great music the DVD of what appears to have been a magical evening icing on the cake. Cannot imagine a better gift for the fams of these two tremendous talents than "Live at the Troubadour". If you rate Carole King's "Tapestry" album as a must have, you will enjoy this CD/DVD combo. If you feel that same way about JT's "Mud Slim Slim and the Blue Horizon", this CD/DVD will not disappoint you. Both artists have respect and admiration for one another that comes through loud and clear.

Misery never sounded so beautiful! by Nse Ette
What an absolutely beautiful album this is. I first came across The National last year on the compilation album Dark Was the Night where they contributed the lovely "So far around the bend". Lead singer Matt Berninger's doleful baritone perfectly suits these soothing songs comprising jangly guitars, tinkling pianos, warbling hypnotic effects, orchestral embellishments, and a retro feel.

Opening is the fuzzy Folk of "Terrible love". "Anyone's ghost" is an absolutely brilliant Rockabilly-inflected song Chris Isaak would kill for. The chiming "Little faith" is a delicate thing with lightly military beats, while lead-off single "Bloodbuzz Ohio" is upbeat and still manages to be beautifully gloomy.

Everything is brilliant really, but the ballads really stand out; "Afraid of everyone" (with ghostly harmonies and ending on a nervy note), the acoustic string-swathed "Runaway" (with Berninger crooning "We don't bleed when we don't fight / Go ahead, go ahead / Throw your arms in the air tonight"), the spectacular "Conversation 16" (creepy sounding with reverbing/haunting effects, my absolute favourite), to the gentle piano-driven "England" (which builds to a euphoric climax).

They remind me of so many of my favourite acts; Editors, Interpol, Arcade Fire, and even Morrissey. Definitely one of the best albums of the year, which should see them getting even bigger than they are now.

Court Yard Hounds

Court Yard Hounds
Emily Robison and Martie Maguire of The Dixie Chicks are releasing new music under the moniker Court Yard Hounds.
The Court Yard Hounds profoundly evocative songs tell stories woven into melodies that are both individual and universal. Robison is the lead vocalist and primary writer on most of the tracks, although Maguire takes over the lead on her own solo composition, "Gracefully". The new music spans sounds of folk, country, rock and Americana and includes a collaboration with Jakob Dylan on "See You in the Spring", the wry tale of a couple from the northernmost and southernmost parts of the country who find their biggest obstacle is climatic.

Texas also asserts itself more contentedly in "The Coast", which celebrates neither the east nor west but south coast, and Skyline, which was inspired by the view of San Antonio from Robison's loft. Faster paced songs range from the self-doubting levity of "Then Again" to the fiery outrage of "Ain't No Son", a song about an angry, disapproving father. Fairytale speaks to romantic enchantment, while there's no happily-ever-after in sight in the breakup songs "April's Love" and "It Didn't Make a Sound". read more..

Best Album Ever by Tina Louise Ebaugh
While Natalie Maines has taken a break from music, Martie and Emily made their own! I WAS skeptical about purchasing this because Natalie wasn't in the group, but......I support these girls no matter what, and so I bought it-and was completly satisfied. The girls held back on the twangy banjos and fiddles and did well at writing and singing songs. This album is mellow, harmonic, and peaceful. "The Coast" song is the one song I can't get out of my head. This album is good on a hot summer day with a glass of iced tea.... I love this album, and the girls certainly proved themselves to be capable singers/songwriters on their own. Good job. I bought 6 copies so far. Who needs friends with a CD like this?

However for me, and many other we only tollerated those radio hits to be able to hear the True brilliance of her songwriting then this cd will worth the wait. Together

Together
2010 release, the fifth album from Canadian-US collective The New Pornographers, featuring Neko Case and Destroyer's Dan Bejar, in addition to bandleader and chief songwriter A.C. Newman. Playing to all the New Pornographers strengths, Together combines the freewheeling, glammy spirit of their debut Mass Romantic with the very personal, emotional songwriting of their most recent material. As a result, it's an album that aims to please, as exciting for the New Pornographers obsessive as for casual new listeners. read more..

The everything including the kitchen sink band... by Paul D. Sandor
The New Pornographers are a fantastic super-group that create rousing pop songs, low key rock songs and sing along acoustic ditties (and that's just the first three songs!) Together takes the best parts of past albums Twin Cinema (my favorite) and Challengers and meshes them together in a seamless and joyous manner. The merry men and women who make up TNP take the listener into their kooky world of lust, laughs and melody.

Their leader AC Newman is a melody maker supreme, spinning together sing along after sing along. Neko Case is arguably the best female indie/pop artist of the last five years. Her last two solo albums were on many year end top ten lists (deservedly so.) Her voice is sweeter than butterscotch. Dan Bejar is the x factor in the band taking his songs to creative and unusual places.

My favorite songs: The rousing Up in the Dark; the Belle and Sebastian-like You Can't See My Mirror; and finally the sing along closer, We End Up Together (could be this record's Bleeding Heart Show.)

If you're into indie-rock, new wave, pop, rock (hell, if you're into good music), you owe it to yourself to check out the latest from The New Pornographers. If you're already a fan, then I'm preaching to the choir... come to church and enjoy some good clean porn.

Fairytale speaks to romantic enchantment, while there's no happily-ever-after in sight in the breakup songs "April's Love" and "It Didn't Make a Sound". read more..
