Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.
‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’ read more..

Clapton is Still God by M. Hill
In his autumn years, Clapton is openly examining his life and creating the music he loves. Life, death, jealousy, love and blues are all themes seamlessly woven through the CD. He is finally sober, content in his life and making the music he wants to make with no need to prove anything to anyone. Those that are expecting an ever escalating demonstration of his guitar prowess will be disappointed because for quite some time now, he has refused to be one dimensional. There is plenty of virtuosity on this CD but to want nothing but speed diminishes the value of this music.
This CD isn't disappointing; it is a gift from a mature artist creating music that is pitch perfect for where he is now in his life. The naysayers might be happier with aging rockers like the Stones still pretending they're twenty instead of sixty. Not to imply he's a slouch, Clapton, on Run Back to Your Side, dreams up one of the most infectious guitar riffs since Sunshine of Your Love.
The blues are relatively ageless, but some of these songs would sound ridiculous performed by a young man -- like Rocking Chair. Undoubtedly this didn't escape Clapton when he selected these tunes. This is the time in his life to perform this music, and he has made these songs his own and done it with both grace and mastery. From beginning to end the CD is simply fabulous and I am happy to see where his next CD takes us.
