Clapton

Clapton
Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’ read more..

With nothing left to prove, Clapton enjoys his roots. by Jeff Loudon
When Eric Clapton released Back Home in 2005, he spoke of the record as completing the statement he began with 1989's Journeyman. Five years later, Clapton is back with a new solo record that is more of a reflection on his journeys.

The guitar legend hasn't lost sight of the spotlight in the five years since a solo album release; a vast majority of his work over the last few years has been work rekindling old connection.

After a short run with Cream in 2005, Clapton went on to work with his old Blind Faith bandmate, Steve Winwood and even one of his own heroes, JJ Cale.

For Clapton, a much more diverse spread of talent joins him for some additional reflection. Allen Toussaint, Sheryl Crow, Derek Trucks, and Steve Winwood all accompany Clapton along with many other notable names for one of his most laid back, yet enjoyable records ever.

Able to meld cover songs into completely new musical discoveries, Clapton's guitar work is brilliant as usual, but the surrounding piano, trumpet, harmonica, and other less typical instrumentation for a Clapton record is what makes all fourteen tracks a joy to listen to.

When an artist truly has a passion for the music he or she creates, the result is always much more inspiring. With Clapton, Eric Clapton is not even close to reaching the technical complexity of his earliest work, but with nothing left to prove, it is obvious he is playing the music he loves with the people he respects. Fans of anything he has released over his long career should give this record a listen.
