The Union

The Union
Set for release by Universal in October, 2010, and produced by T Bone Burnett, The Union marks the culmination of a mutual musical adoration that began in the late 1960s, ahead of Elton's debut US performance in 1970 at The Troubadour Club in Los Angeles. The album is a collaboration between Elton and Leon Russell, with songs by Elton and Bernie Taupin; by Elton, Bernie and Leon; by Elton and Leon and by Leon alone.

The Union was recorded in Los Angeles earlier this year, with guest musicians including Brian Wilson, Booker T, Don Was and Neil Young. Cameron Crowe has filmed the sessions for a documentary, creating too a moment of history as this is the first time that the genesis of Elton's music has been recorded on film. Critics who have had an early preview of the album are united in praise for the work that Elton describes as a "Seventies record with a modern feel." read more..

Not Too Little, Never Too Late! by Julie Coelho
I have been a fan of both Leon Russell and Elton John since 1970 when they both appeared on a nighttime T.V. show. I had never seen either, but had heard "Your Song" by Elton on the radio. Leon was new to me and he sang "Home Sweet Oklahoma" with his back-up singers and I was hooked and entranced. Bought every single album of theirs during the following years and then videos and C.D.'s A BIG FAN!

I was fortunate enough to see them both "live" in shows in New York .......and am a fan to this day, happily following their careers and successes.

On television The Union was good, but on C.D. the acoustics, vocals background singers and orchestra out-do the T.V. concert by far. I enjoyed watching the show(though most in the audience were too uptight to stand up and really rock)but the sound can not compare to the C.D. It is fantastic and tight and it's certainly worth spending the few bucks extra for tne DVD as well. Welcome back Leon..........good health and happiness always. Thank you too Sir Elton, Bernie and T-Bone for bringing back Leon-The-Legend in his own space and time!

It's wonderful...marvellous Rod's done it again! by Jan M. Wildeman
The history of The Great American Songbook series is as great as the music. Many know Rod's family years singing around the piano with his Dad and others as a child, learning the "right" way to sing these standards. And that meant the full song with introductory lyrics, as the songwriter intended the full story to be sung. J Records, a small time studio took on the task of helping recreate this Big Band music when Rod's Pop label refused to take a chance. Wow are they sorry? You betcha. Rod still turns out pop music but the latest list of tunes, well, how can I say it but "It's wonderful! Marvellous"! And worth a "million" to have in any record collection.

Love this album. It is a surprising mix of songs. Jamey Johnson's version of "Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" is absolutely the best. And, all proceeds from the sale of the album go to the Imus Ranch for kids with cancer.

Illuminations

Illuminations
On 'Illuminations,' Groban worked with veteran producer Rick Rubin, known for his critically acclaimed work with Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and Dixie Chicks among many others. Groban co-wrote the majority of the songs, including 'Hidden Away,' which he wrote with Dan Wilson - former leader of the band Semisonic and co-writer of several cuts on the Dixie Chicks' 'Not Ready to Make Nice.' 'Hidden Away' was recorded live with Groban singing and playing piano, Matt Sweeney and Smokey Hormel on acoustic guitars, and veteran R&B icon Spooner Oldham on organ, with a striking orchestral arrangement by David Campbell added later. The opening piano chords and the unfolding melody evoke a timeless Americana, a thread from Stephen Foster through Aaron Copland through Paul Simon and Randy Newman, as Groban makes a heartfelt plea not to hide true love or one's true self.

'Illuminations' finds both Groban and Rubin stepping out of each one's respective zone and creating an entirely new zone. The bracing result fulfills Rubin's vision of a 'fine art' Groban record, marrying the warmth of the sweeping American roots of Groban's writing and the grandeur of classical settings by matching the live, one-take performances by Groban and the intimate, core acoustic band with colorful orchestral arrangements by David Campbell and James Newton Howard. read more..

Coming Home (And Welcome Back!) by Scott
Sir Elton and the wonderful, if near forgotten, Mr. Leon Russell have put together one terrific recording here with "The Union".

Aside from a singular complaint - as with most CDs, Track One not withstanding, the overall mix comes across as favoring the mid-range a bit too much for my taste - I have little to add to the conversation but my own personal observations. (Not a problem with the vinyl, but not many enjoy those anymore.)

Highlights - the slow, exquisite build from Tracks One through Four ("If It Wasn't For..."/"Eight Hundred Dollar Shoes"/ Elton rocking away on "Hey Ahab"/ with things leveling off at the stark and mournful "Gone To Shiloh"). (Expect many another singer songwriter, no matter their style or bias, to re-record this all but instant classic.)

"Jimmie Rogers Dream" (in another life Bernie Taupin surely must have been an old cow hand).

"Monkey Suit" (classic Elton with a well deserved tip of the cap to Jerry Lee and so many others).

"The Best Part Of The Day" is sweet and poignant.

Oh, Leon! ("A Dream Come True")

Pretty much the whole rest of the album. (Of note, "Hearts Have Turned To Stone" surely needs to also be recorded live.)

Lowlights - but for my one (admittedly 'audiophile') complaint: none really.

Addendum: For those of you who going in have no idea who Leon Russell is, consider purchasing, at the very least, "Retrospective". If not that, the self-titled "Leon Russell" and, of course, "Carney" are MUST Haves.

Spectacular album. As usual. by BunnyLover12
If I had to pick the best album out of all four (five if you count Live on the Inside), I would have to say this album, The Incredible Machine. However, all of them are wonderful albums, and this is nothing short of amazing, pure, and wonderful. I'd say you're wasting time by NOT buying this album, and buying another one. Sugarland is a great duo, both on and off the stage. My Mom and I support them 100% all of the way. We just hope that they make another Christmas album because their voices are amazing for Christmas music.

Unbelieveable! by James T. Mott
I just got this in the mail from Amazon. I just listened to it once through. I cannot go into details about it because (again) I have only listened to this once through.

What I can say is that who knew that in the year 2010 Elton and Leon could make such an insanely classic album. Is it 1973? It sounds like it and it is all good.

I have been a fan of both of these gentlemen for years. I have scene them both in concert as well. I can only tell you that if you love old classic rock/folk, definetely piano driven songs with a feel of (when music was great) than you MUST simply buy this. Do not worry about not hearing it on the radio. We all know you won't. Radio is too busy playing the music of pole dancers and grunge sound alikes/Creed sound alikes.

This is like Carole King's Tapestry or any old James Taylor album or Elton or Leon.

Sensational! Go clean house at the Grammy's now boys. You both deserve it!

Incredible Incredible Machine by H. Kloran
Why does everyone seem to be getting hung up on genre ?

This album is nothing less than spectacular. I liked back in the day when artists like Queen, Prince & David Bowie [to name but a few] would have a a diferent sound on each album, yet still sound like themeselves. Sugarland has done this w/ The Incredible Machine. I would rather an artist give the fans something new and intersting, thus helping them grow, rather than xeroxing what previously worked [i.e. taylor swift .. all of her tunes sound almost exactly the same].

Sure The Incredible Machine isn't a country album by any means but it is great. The title track is very atmospheric and moody and for being 5 min goes by way too quickly. Little Miss will work well on country radio. Shine The Light is this album's Stay, moving and heartfelt.

To those that expect a certain sound from an artist I say: OPEN YOUR MINDS and do not pidgeon hole YOUR music tastes.

My only complaint is that the cover art is kinda bland. Sugarland spent a lot of time and effort creating a fantastic set and costumes using the steam-punk style for the concert tour, but it didn't transfer on to the CD cover.

Dualing Pianos and a Return to Form by The D Man
Im not going to try and explain the back story behind the album that has been told over 100 times now. What I will tell you is about how amazing this CD is. Eltons soft voice next to Leons rough growling works so well together. When I first heard 30 second clips of this album I was unimpressed, and thought Leon sounded terrible, but man am I glad I got it. Only through listening on a CD can you truly hear the songs with Eltons piano on your left speaker, Leon's on your right. The whole album is mastered wonderfully and anyone looking up the full songs on youtube are doing them a great disjusctice. This is not a pop CD nor is it a collection of boring slow songs. What we get is one of the best Country Rock and Roll albums ever made. I am not a fan of country at all but this is just fantastic music anyone can enjoy. The use of pianos, horns, and back up singers make this sound like one of the most epic records ever recorded. Unlike his last few records all the songs were recorded live (and on analog devices, not digital) and the energy is really drawn out. We have some upbeat western songs (Hey Ahab, Jimy Rodger's Dream, Monkey Suit), some deeply dark songs (Gone to Shiloh, THere's no Tommorow) Ballads (Eight HUndred Dollar Shoes, I should have sent Roses) and anything else a great record could ask for and more. Usually reviewer's like to pick some "Highlight Tracks" but this whole album is so great that I am perplexed, at a loss of words.

Elton and Leon's voice really do complement each other, what note one can't reach the other can. I felt like a complete fool for ever thinking Leon couldnt sing, you just must hear this album and how wonderful and upbeat it is. This is the best Elton CD in the last 20 years (since Sleeping with the Past) and it is ar eal fun rocker to listen to although initially I thought it was going to be a more slow kind of CD I was definitely wrong. Having Leon around really gets Elton hyped and full of creative energy which makes this album a unique original record. If you love Elton John, or if you just love music this is something definitely not to pass up. If you are an Elton fan like me who first thought "This doesnt sound good how is it getting these great reviews" go out and buy the album and you will be BLOWN AWAY at how great it is. Elton may not sound like he did when he made albums such as "The One" or "Honky Chateu" but this is his most solid album (as in all the tracks are great and any of them could be seen as the best) in the last 30 years.

I got the Deluxe version for the 2 bonus tracks (1 slow song) (1 uptempo song) which are both great. The documentary DVD I was definitely looking forward to but WHAT, it's the same 6 and a half minute video that was posted to fans a month ago. This is false advertising to say it includes I making of documentary by Cameron Crowe as this is WAY too short. It is also a huge waste of a DVD disc. If this was any other CD I would feel really angry and ripped off but luckily the CD was excellent enough to make me forget about that DVD. So save your self some cash and buy the regular version. I am in the process of emailing Decca Records as I think this may have been a manufacturing error as there is a full movie Cameron Crowe has made that is screening in film festivals that is what is supposed to be on this disc.

Le Noise

Le Noise
This eight-song album is a collaboration between the acclaimed rock icon and musician, songwriter, and producer Daniel Lanois, known for his work with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Brian Eno, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, The Neville Brothers and many others. As producer or co-producer Lanois won Grammy Awards in 1987, 1992, 1997, 2000, and 2001.

Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois' performances at Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young's performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson's music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois' home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, ‘Le Noise’ features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just ‘a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording,’ as Lanois puts it.

‘Neil was so appreciative of the sonics that we presented to him,’ Lanois says. ‘He walked in the door and I put an acoustic guitar into his hands - one that I had been working on to build a new sound. That's the multi-layered acoustic sound that you hear on the songs 'Love and War' and 'Peaceful Valley Boulevard.' I wanted him to understand that I've spent years dedicated to the sonics in my home and that I wanted to give him something he'd never heard before. He picked up that instrument, which had everything - an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds - and he knew as soon as he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It's hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of 50 years of rock and roll, but I think we did it.’ read more..

I like this CD, but... by mr x
I like this CD like I do most of Neil Young's work, but I'm having a hard time hearing the wizardry of Daniel Lanois. It looks like DL added a bit of echo to the guitar and occasionally the vocals, but after the self-important interviews I read with DL where he said he was going to lead Neil to the promised land with that patented Lanois touch, I thought there was going to be something new and amazing in the sound. Maybe there is, if you have a $3000 stereo, which I sadly do not. That's not a criticism - I like the sound and songs on the album. I just want to hear what is new and special or have someone explain it to me. Echoey Neil is fine with me, but was DL full of self-promoting hooey? Discuss.

The bracing result fulfills Rubin's vision of a 'fine art' Groban record, marrying the warmth of the sweeping American roots of Groban's writing and the grandeur of classical settings by matching the live, one-take performances by Groban and the intimate, core acoustic band with colorful orchestral arrangements by David Campbell and James Newton Howard. read more..

Clapton

Clapton
Co-produced by guitarist and long-time collaborator Doyle Bramhall II, ‘Clapton’ features an all star cast of musical collaborations started with the legendary JJ Cale, drummer Jim Keltner, bassist Willie Weeks, and keyboardist Walt Richmond - and the sessions later added guests including Steve Winwood, Wynton Marsalis, Sheryl Crow, Allen Toussaint, and Derek Trucks. Clapton created a collection that touches on everything from century-old traditional brass bands to little-known country blues to brand-new originals. The result is both relaxed and revelatory, and unlike anything the guitarist has done in his legendary career.

‘This album wasn't what it was intended to be at all,’ says Eric Clapton. ‘It's actually better than it was meant to be because, in a way, I just let it happen. It's an eclectic collection of songs that weren't really on the map - and I like it so much because if it's a surprise to the fans, that's only because it's a surprise to me, as well.’ read more..

Still Life... by Adios
I bought this CD not realizing it was "just" released, which made things better in someways because it still isnt available in Jakarta where I live.

I played it without knowing what to expect... My very first reaction was positive. I was a bit tentative in wondering what the overall mood and sound would be - and was happy that the production wasnt one of the electronic simon climie type thinsg (nothing against him, but i got into hearing clapton from a younger era).

Then... for the first 4-5 songs its pretty disappointing. It's got a smoky loungy feeling to it, and as if it was made by a 60 year old :-). At its worst a lounge singer putting together some late night semi-ballads without stretching himself and at its best like someone trying hard to put together a JJ Cale sound. (Wait that one track was JJ Cale). I should say here that as an EC fan I am a bit of a purist, and love JJ Cale too...

But then the album really opens up around the 5th track - My Best friend the MilkMan, a Fats Waller cover, and from there on it sounds like EC starts enjoying himself, the Band lightens up and he even starts to get some feeling and blues edge into the music without sounding (adequately) raw or bitter. I can well visualise listening to Diamonds out of rain and hard time blues years from now, string sections notwithstanding.

Overall I think this album was a good EC album though not tops. Somewhat reminscent of the easy listening style that he was going for in the mid-seventies - with a similar pattern of walk on parts for superstars happy to play sidemen. They dont impose on any of the songs.

This album - especially after the 4-5th track is growing on me very very quickly...
